Importance of MR Safe Products

The MRI environment is fundamentally different from every other imaging modality. The strong static magnetic field, radiofrequency energy, and gradient magnetic fields create a set of safety requirements that don't exist anywhere else in the imaging department. Equipment that works safely in a radiography room, fluoroscopy suite, or CT scanner may become a projectile hazard, a burn risk, or a source of image artifact in the MRI suite.
For positioning aids, immobilization devices, and imaging accessories, this means that the items used in the MRI environment must be specifically verified as safe for that environment. 'It looks non-magnetic' is not a safety assessment. 'It's always been in there and nothing has happened' is not a safety protocol.
MR Safe vs. MR Conditional vs. MR Unsafe
The ASTM International and the FDA have established standardized terminology for describing the MRI safety status of devices and accessories:
MR Safe: An item that poses no known hazards in any MRI environment. MR Safe items are non-metallic, non-conductive, and non-magnetic. They can be used in any MRI suite at any field strength without restriction.
MR Conditional: An item that has been demonstrated to be safe under specific conditions. MR Conditional items may be used in the MRI environment only under the conditions specified by the manufacturer which are typically defined by maximum field strength, maximum spatial gradient, and maximum RF field. Using an MR Conditional item outside its specified conditions can be hazardous.
MR Unsafe: An item that poses a known hazard in any MRI environment and must not be brought into the MRI suite. All standard ferromagnetic items like scissors, hemostats, standard sandbags, conventional positioning equipment with metal components are MR Unsafe.
These are not interchangeable labels. The distinction between MR Safe and MR Conditional matters: an MR Safe item can go into any MRI room without qualification, while an MR Conditional item requires verification that the specific MRI environment falls within the item's tested conditions.
The Projectile Hazard: Why It Matters for Positioning Aids
The static magnetic field in a clinical MRI system (typically 1.5T or 3T) exerts powerful attractive force on ferromagnetic objects. A standard sandbag containing sand with even small amounts of ferromagnetic mineral content can be pulled toward the magnet bore with dangerous force. Metal zippers, snaps, hooks, and wire reinforcements found in conventional positioning aids create similar projectile risks.
MRI projectile incidents are among the most serious safety events in medical imaging. Items that appear harmless such as oxygen tanks, IV poles, wheelchairs, and yes, positioning equipment, have caused patient injuries and equipment damage when introduced into the magnetic field without proper screening. Using only verified MR Safe or appropriately MR Conditional positioning aids eliminates one category of projectile risk entirely.

MR-Safe Sandbags
Techno-Aide manufactures sandbags specifically for the MRI environment using non-ferromagnetic fill material and MR-safe vinyl encasement. These sandbags function identically to standard sandbags for patient immobilization providing gentle weight to stabilize the patient in position without introducing ferromagnetic material into the magnet room.
MR-Safe sandbags should be clearly labeled and stored separately from conventional sandbags. Color-coded or distinctively marked MR-Safe equipment prevents the most common mistake in MRI accessory safety: accidentally bringing standard equipment into the magnet room because it 'looks the same.'
MRI Positioning Sponges
Techno-Aide's closed-cell foam positioning sponges are inherently non-metallic and non-magnetic, making them compatible with the MRI environment. The foam contains no metallic components or ferromagnetic particles. It is important, however, to verify that any coating or surface treatment applied to the sponge is also MR-safe as some coatings contain metallic compounds that could create artifacts or, in rare cases, interact with RF energy.
For MRI suites, non-coated or verified MR-safe coated sponges in the standard wedge, rectangle, and bolster shapes provide the same positioning functionality used in general radiography, without MRI-specific safety concerns.
MRI Accessories
Beyond positioning aids, MRI suites need a range of MR-safe accessories: patient comfort items (blankets, pads, headphones), safety equipment (hearing protection, patient monitoring cables), and workflow items (landmarking devices, coil positioning pads). Every item brought into the magnet room should have a documented MR safety status.

Maintaining MRI Zone Safety
The four-zone model (Zones I through IV) established by the American College of Radiology provides the framework for MRI access control. Zone IV, the magnet room itself, should contain only items that have been screened and verified as MR Safe or MR Conditional within the specific scanner's parameters. Zone III, the area immediately outside the magnet room, serves as the final checkpoint where all items and personnel are screened before entering Zone IV.
A well-managed MRI suite maintains a defined inventory of approved items for Zone IV. Positioning aids, sandbags, sponges, and accessories should be on this inventory, with each item's MR safety status documented. When items are replaced or new items are added, they go through the safety verification process before entering the magnet room.
